About Medicare
Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed to assist American citizens and permanent legal residents in accessing high-quality, low-cost healthcare.
Here is how it works.
Ninety days prior to the first day of your birthday month when you will turn 65, you are eligible to apply for Medicare Part A and Part B.
The combination of Parts A and B covers 80% of your medical expenses. Part A covers hospitalization. Part B covers doctor visits.
From the time you order your Medicare card from the Social Security Administration, it could take up to 45 days for delivery. So order early.
As long as you meet the qualifications to participate in Medicare, there is no charge for Part A. There is monthly fee – depending on your income – for Part B.

Benefits for Social Security and Medicare are administered by the Social Security Administration. But they are two different programs. You need to register for each program separately. Most people will start Medicare at age 65 but wait until they are fully vested in Social Security (now 67) to start collecting those benefits.
The biggest choice in Medicare is how to cover the remaining 20% of your health care expenses. This is when you need the expert advice of Amy Kelley, The Insurance Nana. The choices are Medicare Advantage (also known as Part C) or a Medicare Supplement (also known as MediGap).
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage, in most counties, offers a zero cost plan. In return, you pay as you go. For example, you might have a $30 co-payment for a doctor visit, a $90 co-payment for an ambulance trip or a $270 co-payment per day for a hospital stay of up to five days. The plan also requires participants to stay within a specific health insurance company’s network of providers.
Medicare Supplements
A Medicare Supplements plan does have a monthly fee. (Please call for a quote.) In addition, a Part D prescription drug plan can be purchased at the same time. With a Medicare Supplement plan, there are no co-payments when you visit any doctor, hospital or medical services provider. You can go to any health care provider in the United States as long as they accept Medicare. You are not limited to a network of doctors. Everything is covered at 100 percent – except for the Part B deductible, which was only $203 for the year in 2021. It is expected to be $217 in 2022.
