We all know that January is usually the time of year when a lot of folks start thinking about their health. They make lists of New Year’s Resolutions and promise themselves they’ll get in shape or lose weight.
By February, however, a lot of people have already set aside those plans for getting healthier and returned to their old ways.
What if I told you that it didn’t have to be like that? Being healthier for 2018 doesn’t mean you necessarily have to change up your entire routine. Just taking better care of yourself and taking some “me” time can have huge health benefits that can help you down the road.
Below are five things you can do in Kennesaw that can help you stay healthy.
#1 Join a Dance Class
Ballroom dancing, Zumba, ballet, tap, and hip hop. You might think that dance classes are more for children, but many dance studios offer adult classes too. Dancing is a great whole-body workout and the best part is, it’s actually fun! Depending on the type of dance you perform, you can burn upwards of 443 calories, and it can provide a great chance for you to socialize.
#2 Get a Mammogram and/or a Yearly Check Up
Did you know that a mammogram can show changes occurring in the breast up to two years before a patient or doctor can even feel them? According to the American College of Radiology, getting your annual mammogram not only can help detect cancer early, it can also help prevent the need for receiving advanced cancer treatment (when something is found) and helps improve the chances of breast conservation.
#3 Take a Hike Up Kennesaw Mountain
Nothing is better for the body and soul than getting back to nature and the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is just the place to do it.
The park’s popular West Trail starts at the visitor center and provides visitors with a two-mile hike (one mile each way) that will take them to the top of Kennesaw Mountain and back down again.
The park lists the trail at a difficulty level of “strenuous,” but reports that there are plenty of rocks you can stop and sit on if you decide you need to catch your breath and rest.
#4 Take a Yoga Class
Getting healthy isn’t just about getting your body in shape, it’s also about learning to turn off all that stress in your mind. Yoga can reduce stress, sharpen attention and increase concentration.
Try a Kennesaw Yoga class at New Day Yoga (offering Yoga from a Christian perspective) to inspire your spirit, or take a class at Hot Yoga Kennesaw where you can burn 600 to 1000 calories by taking a class in one of their heated rooms.
#5 Go Ice Skating
Ice skating may seem effortless when you are at home watching it on television from the comfort of your couch, but in reality, it builds leg muscles and can give you an extensive cardio workout.
You may think you have to head up north to find an ice skating rink, but that’s really not the case.
Kennesaw is one of only a few cities in Metro Atlanta that actually has its own ice skating rink. Ice Forum is open 365 days a year and offers public sessions for those who do know how to skate and skating classes for those who don’t (or just want to improve their skating).
Just like an apple a day, staying healthy can help keep the doctor away. When you do have to visit the doctor, or have a hospital stay, it can cost you a lot of money. Having the right health insurance plan, however, can help your billfold stay healthy by keeping more money in your pocket.
